What is RTP - How Does It Function?
RTP commonly known as Return to Player is phrase online casinos and casino game manufacturers use to describe the long terms theoretical expected payback (as a percentage) from all bets placed on a specific slot machine.
The word theoretical is important because we are simply dealing with statistics here. Slot machines are not programmed to follow a specific algorithm or pattern of how they should take and how they should pay out. Slot machines are random in their nature like a flip of a coin.
Taking a coin as an example we would say, if the coin is fair then we expect 50% heads and 50% tails over the long term. If we bet one (1) euro per coin toss and received two (2) euro if we get heads and nothing if we get tails then we could say the RTP of the coin in this configuration is of 100%.
That is, if we make 1,000,000 coin tosses for €1 each, placing €1,000,000 in total bets and get heads 50% of the time, then we would win €2 on 500,000 of the coin tosses and win nothing (or lose our €1 wager) on the rest of the 500,000.
So in total we bet €1,000,000 and win €1,000,000 making our coin toss game a 100% theoretical RTP game.
This assumes perfect odds, which are never the case but the more rounds placed the more the system's overall odds will approach the theoretical value.
What we mean by the above statement is very simple, a coin toss is 50/50 but in reality it is not, you can get 4 heads in a row out of 5 coin tosses, if you toss the coin 1,000 times then the number starts to even itself out to closer and closer to the 50/50 mark - 1,000,000 coin tosses and the probability gets even closer to 50/50%.
The theoretical RTP of a slot machine can in many ways be considered to function in a similar manner, it's basically the pure mathematical return expressed as a percentage that a slot machine will give back in its lifetime (or over an infinite number of spins to be more precise).
If a slot machine has a 97% RTP and you make a single €1 spin it does NOT mean you will get €0.97 back on that exact same spin, you may lose the €1 or win €100. However the more spins which are made the closer the overall return would be to the theoretical 97%.
